BIM is the future… or so we are told
The benefits of collaborating on a single design drawing that can reduce build time and costs, as well as make a significant impact on the time and money spent maintaining the new build are clearly something everyone should be excited about.
BUT… not all major projects are new builds. In fact many are refurbishments of existing buildings, extensions or infills which requires highly accurate information of the existing to start the collaborative process.
This is where 3D scanning makes a big impact. 3D laser scanners take close to one million measurements per second with an accuracy that is simply not possible with a Disto. In addition it captures EVERYTHING visible during the scanning process meaning you have a true ‘as built’ model of the building.
Upon completion of the site work the raw scans are processed into a single 3D image that can be imported into revit where it is then drawn into a highly accurate (+/- 2mm over 130m) revit model to the level of detail required by the client.
In addition to the point cloud the scanner also captures colour imagery of the area it has scanned enabling us to produce 360° virtual walkthroughs of the building. This together with the added functionality of attaching PDF files or web links and also take accurate dimensions off the point cloud is being utilised by some of our clients are using to support their help desk, enabling their support staff to be virtually in a space assessing requirements, health and safety issues instantly and avoiding unnecessary visits.
