What we do for our clients, and why is it required
Accurate medical gas record drawings aren’t a choice, they’re a necessity. Section 5.37 of the current HTM 02-01 for Medical Gas Pipeline Systems details the need for accurate and up-to-date medical gas record drawings and how they should be maintained. But, did you also know that up-to-date drawings and records are required under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000.
Although most healthcare providers have a set of drawings, we find that these (like so many other drawings) tend to be neglected due to being treated as a standalone set, or have been thought of as accurate despite changes being made to the medical gas system. To prevent this, we believe its best practice to incorporate them into the master set of your layered CAD drawings. This helps to ensure that when updates are made to the building, the impact on the medical gases is not overlooked.
Achieve accuracy efficiently and economically…
Our specialist medical gases survey team works in conjunction with authorised medical gases engineers and project managers to locate any existing medical gas record drawings in order to ensure the most cost-effective approach. Surveying from scratch when no drawings are available is not unheard of.
As part of the survey we collect the location of main sections and branches, departments served, the direction of flow and pipe work sizes, control valves, terminal units and alarm systems for each medical gas service. Once we’ve got the vital information we need, we add it to the AutoCAD drawings in accordance with an agreed layering and symbol convention.
Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust for example required production of site wide schematic drawings with accurate records of all the piped medical, pathology and dental gas systems (Oxygen, Nitrous Oxide, Entonox, Medical Air, Surgical Air, Vacuum and Anaesthetic Gas Scavenging System) at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary in Wigan, as part of an integrated compliance programme. We were supplied with medical gas drawings in various formats for the majority of the MGPS at the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary.
How we completed the project
Each project has its own senior project manager who liaises with the client and other stakeholders (department heads, building managers and other key staff members) to verify the requirements and ensure that we are able to produce a survey programme that minimises site disruption and allows us into any challenging areas, such as theatres.
We carried out a high level review of the supplied drawings to determine the approximate area with medical gases and formulated our tailored approach.
Our approach was based on using the supplied sample schematic drawings and included pipe sizes where they were shown on the supplied as-builts. We went right down to the last AVSU in the system as the scope required it, but had it been required we could have gone down to the individual outlets.
We created the schematic for areas we were given drawings for and added the design flow rates.
The completed drawings were added to the master CAD drawings so that the pipe runs can be viewed in their actual location in relation to the walls, beds, etc.
Investment in your medical gas drawings needs to be protected. As is the case with your building outline drawings, it is essential that drawings and data are maintained and updated and that regular onsite audits are conducted to ensure that even the smallest changes are captured.
